Vulcan Girls grab medal glory in national finals

Four girls from Lincoln Vulcans have made history by winning their school’s first ever national swimming medal.

The Junior Girls team from The Priory Academy LSST claimed the bronze medal in the 4x50m freestyle final at the English Schools Relay Championships in Southampton.

Abigail Burr, Tara Haworth, Lucy Porter and Gabrielle Vickers scythed more than two seconds off their qualifying time to snatch third place by just one-tenth of a second.

In a super-charged final leg, Gabrielle clawed back two metres to make the touch ahead of London’s Latymer School and only a second behind winners Guildford High School and runners-up Kelly College, Tavistock.

“It was an unbelievable achievement from the four girls,” said PE coach Katie Bentley. “The whole of the Academy is very proud of them. The school has never won a national swimming medal before.”

The Vulcans girls had also qualified as East Midlands schools champions in the 4x50m individual medley, and finished the final ranked 12th in the country.
