Junior League - round 3
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Awesome Vulcans regain Lincolnshire Junior League Title
Lincoln Vulcans Swimming Club regained the Lincolnshire Junior League trophy after a tremendous effort from their young swimmers on Saturday evening at Yarborough Leisure Centre. After losing the title to Cleethorpes & Scunthorpe Aquatic (CASA) in a highly charged and closely fought final round in 2008, Vulcan's juniors were determined to win back the title they had previously held for a number of years.
Club Head Coach Fred Furniss was as eager to regain top spot for his junior competitors and a rousing team-talk before the competition left everyone raring to go and in no doubt that only first place would be acceptable!
On the evening, the whole team contributed to the eventual success. Both Vulcans and CASA came into the final round of the championship on equal points after the previous two rounds. The swimmers started the gala knowing that both clubs looked inseparable on paper but the opening win set the tone for the evening and a total of 36 wins, 6 second-places and 5 third-places out of 49 races saw the Vulcans finish clear winners by a massive 42 points.
Head Coach, Fred Furniss, congratulated the swimmers after their impressive victory.
"Tonight all of our team has performed brilliantly. We knew that the result could be very close and it is a tribute to the determination and ability of the team that they have won the gala, and the title, so convincingly."
Club Chairman, David Hendel, added his congratulations to the team:
"It is great to see that, after last year's disappointment, many members of the 2008 team have now tasted success. Their achievement is in no small part down to the training and coaching programme we have here under Fred. Both Fred, Jude and Nigel have worked really hard with our younger swimmers over the last year and it is great that they have been rewarded in this way."
Lincoln Vulcans now go forward as Lincolnshire Junior League Champions to the Northern final in October. The top four clubs from the Northern final will then compete alongside the top four clubs in the South of England at the National final In November.
Final score:
| Lincoln Vulcans A | 219 pts |
| CASA | 177 pts |
| Louth | 141 pts |
| Grantham | 104 pts |
| Trenton Dolphins | 83 pts |
LVSC B were also in action on Saturday placing 4th in their final round gala at Scunthorpe.
